Magee birding 21-Apr-2006

Visited the boardwalk for a short while before and after hawkwatching. Temps overnight remained above 55 degrees with little to no wind and some fog. Despite the warm night, maybe the heavy cloud cover and lack of wind prevented much of a movement. Numbers and species Friday morning were lower than expected, although White-throated Sparrows were numerous.

In less than an hour on the boardwalk Friday morning:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet x
Purple Finch (1)
Palm Warbler x
Myrtle Warbler x
Winter Wren x
House Wren x
White-throated Sparrow xxx
Hermit Thrush x
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher x
Brown Thrasher x
Rusty Blackbird x

Nice groups of Blue Jays were migrating along the shoreline.

After hawkwatching, went back to the boardwalk for about an hour. It got chilly, and over the lake, it was extremely foggy.

I stopped at the BSBO office on my way out, and in just that short of a distance, it was noticably warmer. Have to love the micro climates along the lakeshore in the spring.
