A brief cruise through Maumee Bay St Park this morning netted a single Greater White-fronted Goose and a possible Cackling Goose on the inland simming beach. The possible Cackling was of course much smaller than all of the other Canadas, including an orange collared and several whit-collared birds. It was also a little smaller than the GWFG. It was small headed, and short necked. Unfortunately I did not get a good look at the bill but am left with the impression that a stubby bill would lend to a small headed look.
Last fall the geese numbers and diversity at this location increase right up to the point the inland lake froze over so I suspect these birds will be around a while. Do note that they fly out to near by agri fields to feed early in the morning and return mid morning. I presume there is a similar evening flight.
In addition, a few Tundra Swans have been around the last few days, often seen in the agri fields south of Little Cedar Point NWR.
